With the large sums of money they handle throughout the year, casinos naturally attract bandits of all kinds.
When it’s not robbers attacking an establishment with armed hands, it’s cheats pulling off a scam. This is the latter scenario that the Crans-Montana Casino in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, has just fallen victim to. A gang of criminals managed to tamper with the software of the gambling complex’s slot machines.
This allowed them to dishonestly earn 400,000 Swiss francs , before being caught by the police. This group of scammers, made up of six people from Croatia, Turkey and the Balkans, some of whom had Belgian and French passports, has just been tried by the Swiss courts.
She received sentences ranging from 14 months in prison to a suspended sentence of 6 months.
The facts
It was at the end of last December that the gang of cheats who defrauded the Crans-Montana Casino was finally arrested by the police. They were caught because they were too greedy. They always wanted more. Initially, these notorious criminals managed to unearth software that allowed them to tamper with slot machines , making them more lucrative for players.
They then had to hire a member of staff from the gambling establishment. He was tasked with installing this software on the various devices. With a good dose of nerve and the invaluable help of Russian hackers, the cheating system was in place. All that was left for our bandits to do was play to win money. In total, the small gang managed to illicitly amass no less than 400,000 Swiss francs.
The judgment pronounced
Shortly after their arrest by police, the Crans-Montana Casino scammers were brought before the Swiss courts. Tried under simplified procedure, the main members of the gang received prison sentences. The rest of the team consists of ordinary gamblers meant to cover their tracks.
The court was more lenient with them. They were sentenced to lighter prison terms, suspended only. As foreign nationals, they will all be expelled from the country for periods of between seven and ten years.
